Stephen King haunts musical theatre with Ghost Brothers of Darkland County

“You can do things with music you just can’t do with words,” says the horror master of what drew him to co-create The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, playing Massey Hall on Nov. 11

By: Ben Rayner Pop Music Critic, Published on Fri Nov 07 2014

It figures that Stephen King — a populist conjurer, chronicler and curator of America’s most demonic imaginings for 40 years now — would harbour at least one disturbing secret of his own.

Brace yourself, then, because here it is: dude loves musicals. Loves them. While he was sitting at his typewriter, dutifully pecking out the shape of your nightmares to come in the form of such indelible horror classics as The Shining , The Stand , Pet Sematary , It and Misery back in the day, in fact, there’s a very good chance he might have been humming “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “What’s the Use of Wond’rin?” or even “I Feel Pretty” to himself.

So when King stresses that he and collaborators John Mellencamp and T Bone Burnett took great pains throughout the horrifically long creative slog that yielded their new(-ish) theatre production , Ghost Brothers of Darkland County , to avoid “the whole Broadway-musical thing, with the huge ensemble orchestra and all that,” know that he’s making that statement from an affectionate place.

“It’s not the sort of music you would hear, for instance, in My Fair Lady ,” says King of the Ghost Brothers score, moving swiftly to calm an interviewer who’s actually rather fond of My Fair Lady . “I like ’em all, don’t get me wrong! My Fair Lady , West Side Story , Carousel , Oklahoma! — ‘Where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain’ — I like ’em all. I love musicals.

“But I wanted — and I talked with John about this — to keep it sort of American music, and I mentioned this show Big River to him, which the late, great Roger Miller wrote. Just keep it kind of a mixture of country, blues and rock ’n’ roll. And John was down with that.”

With actress Gina Gershon and Billy Burke of Twilight infamy in the lead roles and a four-piece band hacking out the tunes, The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County makes its Canadian debut at Massey Hall on Tuesday on a month-long North American tour that launches just three days earlier in Orono, Me.

It’s only the second time the play — a blood-spattered musical spine-tingler set in a haunted cabin on Lake Belle Reve in Mississippi in 1967 and sporting a period-appropriate Americana soundtrack by Mellencamp — has been mounted in any serious form. A short theatrical tour followed Ghost Brothers ’ debut at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre in 2012, while the music — available on an all-star CD/DVD package featuring the likes of Elvis Costello, Roseanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson and Neko Case — made the rounds as a traveling concert production last year.

But King is particularly high on the leaner, meaner current version, which he likens to “an old-fashioned radio play. It’s sorta stripped down, and I like that because it means that anybody, anywhere could do it.”

King admits he was still tinkering with the script as recently as three weeks ago, but that seems par for the course for The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County . He and Mellencamp have been labouring over the thing for something like 15 years.

Indeed, King recalls, he was still on crutches after the “encounter with a van” that nearly killed him in June of 1999 when his singer/songwriter friend first pitched him the idea of doing a musical together.

“I’ll tell you how long ago this was, Ben,” he laughs. “There was dial-up at this time.”

A good yarn is a good yarn, though, and Mellencamp had stumbled across a particularly good one after purchasing a lakeside vacation cabin in Indiana that, unbeknownst to him, also came with three ghosts.

“The sale went through, but after the sale was done the guy said to him: ‘You know this cabin is haunted,’” says King. “He waited until he had the cheque before he said that. But John is not a guy who gets scared very easily, so he was interested in it and he wanted to know what the story was.”

According to local lore, two brothers had paid a visit to the cabin years before in the company of a young woman they were trying to impress. A combination of booze and boyish bravado inspired them to try their hand at a little William Tell action, and one of the brothers foolishly attempted to shoot an apple off the other’s head with a rifle. Needless to say, the stunt ended in a gunshot wound to the head.

“The boy who’d done the shooting and the girl freaked out, as anybody would, and they threw this kid in the car to get him to the hospital,” says King. “They were driving really fast on a gravel road and they hit a tree not far from the cabin, and they were killed. So all three of them died and supposedly all three of their ghosts haunted the cabin.”

With that sad (but spooky) tale as inspiration, King and Mellencamp began sending story notes and song demos back and forth, getting more and more “fired up” about the project as it slowly came into focus.

Emphasis on slowly, mind you. Both Mellencamp and King — who, at 67, is about to release his second novel of the year , Revival , on Tuesday — tend to have a lot on their plates, so the play didn’t get the final push it needed for completion until T Bone Burnett entered the picture around 2010.

Roots-rock producer extraordinaire Burnett had produced Mellencamp’s last couple of records, including 2010’s No Better Than This , which was partially recorded at Nashville’s famed Sun Studios and contained a lot of music “that was like the Ghost Brothers music, this kind of acoustic rock ’n’ roll with a country tinge to it.”

Mellencamp had an epiphany and asked King: “What would you think if we brought T Bone on board?” King, a fan of Burnett’s soundtrack work on Wild At Heart and O Brother, Where Art Thou? was enthusiastic.

“That was just perfect. That was just in the sweet spot,” says King. “So T Bone came on board. He’s real laid-back and I am, too, and John’s intense so we all fit together pretty well, and we ended up with a pretty extraordinary product. I hope people like it.

“It was kind of an exciting idea to get involved with something I’d never done before . . . You’re stuck with the limitations that the stage imposes, but I’ve found with my work — particularly with TV — that that’s a good thing because it forces you to be even more disciplined in what you do.”

Why a musical, then?

“It just adds a whole other dimension,” enthuses King, who has dabbled in rock ’n’ roll himself over the years as a member of the writerly pick-up band the Rock Bottom Remainders .

“You can do things with music you just can’t do with words. You might be able to get that emotional gradient in a book a little bit, but music is so emotional and has such a capacity to lift people up.”

Don’t think King’s gone soft on us, though. Just because The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is a musical doesn’t mean it’s light on scares. Or gore, for that matter. According to a recent American Theatre piece on the play, “the crew includes a special-effects technician, Steve Tolin, who specializes in people getting shot in the head.”

King swears horror fans won’t be disappointed.

“Oh, yeah,” he chuckles. “There’s a lot of blood.”

Totally agree! Thanks for the post.  Absolutely love hearing Minutes to Memories again.  So  nice to see the band 'back in the studio', so to speak, also.  Perfect way to spend an hour.

Good idea Mike although I'd have to suggest Ontario - which you might not like!  Wink
Has John or any of the Farm Aid organizers ever thought of bringing Farm Aid to Canada?  I'd love to be at one of those shows.

Has John pulled anyone up during R.O.C.K during this summer tour?  I know that he was doing that the last time he toured but no one has mentioned that they were pulled up during this tour.
To my recollection this was only done on the full-blown tour last time around - not on the smaller Summer mini-tour gigs in 2010.

Yes, very disappointing to hear about the shortness of the 1st show. As I have tickets for a later concert on the tour I'm hoping this changes. Come on, John!
I know that in the past ie. 2010 casino concert(s) some casinos had a major say in length of show and dictated that to the artist and made sure they were shorter times.

The news we've all been waiting for has been announced.  John's new album "Plain Spoken" will be released this fall.  What is interesting is the fact that John has a lifetime recording contract.  That is something unheard of in today's music industry.

What is also interesting news is that John will release a live album in July.  We have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

Mike
I think even more interesting is that John signed the deal!  Wow, must have been quite a deal for him to put ink to that one....

With the looks of a runway model and the name of a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Ian Mellencamp may be destined for music stardom.

courtesy: Rocket Tone Records

Mellencamp, who issued debut EP "Visions" on Nov. 5, is a fashion model who's been featured in Calvin Klein, Gap and Ralph Lauren ad campaigns. He's also the nephew of Hoosier rock star John Mellencamp.

Ian grew up in suburban Cincinnati, and he played soccer at IUPUI in 2001 and 2002. During a phone interview, he said he left school in Indianapolis to spend more time on Bluf — his rock band back in Ohio. (Mellencamp finished college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio).

After making his mark as a model, Ian said he's fine with any positive or negative attention that comes with being a new Mellencamp in the music industry. His uncle John, if a refresher course is needed, recorded 1980s hits "Pink Houses," "Jack & Diane" and "Paper in Fire."

Ian said he "never had a plan" to use his last name in the recording studio and onstage.

"I've always wanted to do things on my own and not necessarily rely on that connection or association," he said. "I think it's coincidental that I've chosen to use that name. It's just what I've gone by."

John Mellencamp was saddled with the stage name "Johnny Cougar" early in his career and famously fought for the right to be known by his given name.

While John Mellencamp is synonymous with heartland rock, Ian Mellencamp explores electronic textures on "Visions," a three-song project he recorded on a laptop computer.

"I love technology and electronics, especially when it comes to creativity," Ian said. "I've always dabbled in circuit bending and being hands-on with electronics. I'm interested in what's possible with music these days."

Ian's sound can be heard on the song "Dry Land," and its accompanying video made in Friendship, Ind. (an unincorporated community about 50 miles west of Cincinnati).

"Visions" is the first release for Rocket Tone Records, a label co-owned by Eric Mellencamp (Ian's cousin). Ian said Eric's previous work in promotions for country label Curb Records and John Mellencamp's folk-themed storytelling influence him as much as samplers and synthesizers.

"I don't want to exclude one sound or the other," he said.

To sort out the Mellencamp family tree, Seymour, Ind., native Richard Mellencamp is father to three sons: Joe, John and Ted. Ian is Joe's son, and Eric is Ted's son.

Ian, a left-handed guitarist, is ranked as the world's No. 25 male model at Models.com. He said he views that work as a transition into music.

"I was working full-time for my father's company in Cincinnati (Beacon Electric) for a couple years when I was basically writing songs in my bedroom," he said. "This opportunity to come to New York came up. I jumped on it, and it's proven fruitful and allowed me to really dig in and focus on my music."

Ian said he caught John Mellencamp's performance at this year's edition of Farm Aid in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Referring to John as a musical mentor, Ian said his favorite albums by his uncle include early 1990s releases "Whenever We Wanted" and "Human Wheels."

"It might not have been his most prominent time in music, but I definitely was most aware of what music was happening," he said. "Growing up and watching my uncle perform was great. It was like going to school on how to put a good show together."

John Mellencamp: 'I won't be moving in with Meg Ryan'
Featured in Express News

Rocker JOHN MELLENCAMP is refusing to give up his home in Indiana and move in with his girlfriend MEG RYAN in New York because he insists he's "too sensitive" for the Big Apple's Mean Streets.

The Jack & Diane singer admits he wasn't made for the big city and prefers life miles away from the noise, the trash and the paparazzi.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I'm too sensitive to live there (in New York). I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets.

"I'm not leaving Indiana. I'm going to die here."

And as for the cameramen who seem to follow him and Ryan whenever they step out, he adds, "I don't give a f**k about me, but I don't like it for (her)."

Instead he loves his simple life miles away from anyone, painting in a studio above his barn.

He explains, "I get up at eight, I have breakfast, I go to the art studio, and I don't come out until dark."

One of his current works is a massive portrait of his girlfriend and her actress pal Laura Dern.

Now that his musical, ‘Ghost Brothers of Darkland County,’ is behind him, John Mellencamp is ready to get back to rocking. In a new interview, the songwriter says he’s written a massive amount of songs since 2010′s ‘No Better Than This.’

“I’ve got a notebook with 85 new songs that I’ve written for my next record,” he tells Rolling Stone. “T Bone Burnett is going to come out to Indiana sometime in early January and we’re gonna go into the studio for however long it takes to make a new album. I haven’t done one in five years.”

Mellencamp has already rehearsed a bunch of the songs with his band, and will try out some new ones later in the month. Once the new record is out, he hopes to mount an extensive North American tour, with him playing some different venues than he has done in the recent past.

“I want to play places I haven’t played since the 1980s. I want to go to Hays, Kan. and Youngstown, Ohio. In the 1990s I kept playing these same f—in’ sheds and arenas. It was a drag. I’d walk in and realize I’d been in the dressing room fifty times before.”

Even though the details of the record and tour are still undetermined, one thing is certain: the album will be produced by T-Bone Burnett, who worked with Mellencamp on his last three efforts, including ‘Ghost Brothers,’ “I never want to work with anyone else,” Mellencamp says. “At least, I want to work with him as long as he wants to work with me. He’s a minimalist. He was able to strip down all my songs. My ’90s records were almost paint-by-numbers. He came in and said to me, ‘You don’t need this part. You don’t need that part. Take out these background vocals…’”

27  MELLENCAMP DISCUSSION / All About John / Re: He's Back - 2014 will be huge on: December 20, 2013, 04:31:10 pm

If I'm not mistaken, once a tour is announced it will be a North American one - not worldwide.

this is what I read in the article: "Once the album is done, Mellencamp plans to promote it with an extensive world tour. "I want to do one hundred shows in the United States and Canada," he says. "Then I'll deal with the rest of the world later."

Point taken, thanks for clarifying. When I read the US/Canada line I made the forgone conclusion the world would be a great leap away time wise....100 shows is quite the undertaking in the first place.

This sounds like great news. 85 new songs already written and more to come for the recording sessions? The excitement about the new album is rising.
Plus, a world tour to follow, what else can we hope for?

If I'm not mistaken, once a tour is announced it will be a North American one - not worldwide.
