So I like John, but my mom likes him more. Her birthday is coming up, and I want to compile a CD of the best John Mellencamp songs. So far, all I have on my list are Jack & Diane, Cherry Bomb, and Hurts So Good (that one is probably my favorite because my friend Jenny and I used to sing it before we would run a race for our high school track team).

Anyways, I've checked out this website I found a few months ago (www.GoRankem.com) but the average fan standing for John Mellencamp is only at 6 and I feel like people here would know better. It's a great resource for other artists I want to check out, but I think they could use more input.

But tell me, what do you think John Mellencamp's top five songs are? Hopefully I can impress my mom by slipping it into her car and surprising her!

Thanks!

There are so many great songs to choose from it's really difficult to pick only five.  These are some of songs I'd put high on my list.

1. No Better Than This
2. Check It Out
3. Small Town
4. Longest Days
5. Pink Houses

Wow I forgot about Small Town! I love that song. See none of those songs show up in the top ten http://gorankem.com/artists/1856 you guys should give your input to the list. Also what's weird is only three of those show up in iTunes popularity sort.

Glad I asked. Thanks so much! Oh and I like Pink Houses too I never knew what the song was called... My mom would probably shake her head at me about that haha

Name me any of his albums and I'd have a hard time pick the top five songs off of that one album. Picking just five songs overall is an impossible task.

maybe 20 is a more resonable number to narrow it down too Smiley

Its really hard to say.  He has a lot of good songs.  Its like going on a treasure hunt.  But I am sure that whatever you pick out your mother will have a wonderful birthday present.  And Happy Birthday to your mom!!!!

keep the faith / peace & love

This is very difficult for me.  Mellencamp's music is some awesome!  There are songs that I love just because they are fun, like Theo and Weird Henry and Hurt so Good; and there are songs that i love because they have deep meaning, such as Save Some Time to Dream and Ride Back Home.  I guess my favorites often change... but right now here is my list...

5. Longest Days
4. Minutes to Memories
3. Hand To Hold Onto
2. Check it Out
1. Pink Houses - Best song EVER written!
