John Mellencamp Says Pink Houses Don't Stand for Homophobia

Everyone has a favorite John Mellencamp song. Whether it's that little ditty about Jack & Diane, or whether you're more into finding the R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., Mellencamp is in the realm of American artists who transcend generations. So this afternoon, go find Pink Houses in your iTunes, and hit play. Why?

Because Mellencamp made crystal clear today that the song, despite being used by many an anti-gay organization or politician, stands for equality.

Mellencamp's publicist, Bob Merlis, wrote a note specifically to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), the $10 billion organization working to take away civil rights for LGBT people in the U.S.  During NOM's rallies and speaking events, they've blasted Pink Houses from their speakers, giving the impression that Mellencamp (and/or his music) might be down with NOM's mission.

Mellencamp is most definitely not. Check this out from the Courage Campaign's Prop 8 Trial Tracker:

"I am getting in touch with you on behalf of my client John Mellencamp who has become aware that his music (Pink Houses) has been used at events sponsored by your organization," Merlis wrote NOM. "Please be aware that Mr. Mellencamp’s views on same sex marriage and equal rights for people of all sexual orientations are at odds with NOM’s stated agenda."

This isn't the first time that NOM has found themselves in the hot seat over ripping off music to trumpet an anti-equality agenda. Earlier this year, Peter Yarrow from the group Peter, Paul and Mary had an official letter sent NOM's way, telling NOM that the organization should stop playing PPM's classic This Land Is Your Land at their rallies.

"We respect your right to hold and advocate for any position you wish, but the philosophy of the 'National Organization for Marriage' is directly contrary to the advocacy position Peter, Paul & Mary have held for decades, and so we do not want our recording of this song played at your rallies," Yarrow said.

This land was not made for homophobes. And neither were Pink Houses, either.

I'm always amazed at the misuse of John's music by people whose beliefs are so contrary to the messages related in his songs.  I'm glad he's being vigilant and spoke out!
