Yes, just drop the WAV files into your CD burning program and you can then burn them to a disc.

R.O.C.K at the NAC

By Lynn Saxberg, Ottawa Citizen

OTTAWA — John Mellencamp made middle age look cool at the National Arts Centre on Sunday. Sporting a neatly trimmed grey beard, the 59-year-old classic rocker appeared fit and muscular in his tailored suit, while his voice had the power of an avalanche in a gravel pit.

Backed by a top-notch band, the American singer-songwriter-guitarist delivered a two-hour concert that involved storytelling and comedy, but was primarily devoted to showcasing music from each stage of his career, especially the dark, folky songs from the fine new album, No Better Than This, which was produced by T-Bone Burnett.

Mellencamp greeted the crowd with a promise to play “all kinds of songs,” but he doled out the hits sparingly, kicking off with a low-key Authority Song and including a warm, cozy version of Check it Out early in the show. The old nugget, Cherry Bomb, was apparently a request from a fan Mellencamp met while skating on the Rideau Canal earlier that day.

Mellencamp kept it interesting by varying the configuration of the band, from solo to duo to full-band. Violin and accordion filled out the textures, and the guitarists demonstrated an array of techniques. A standup bassist, keyboardist and drummer rounded out the lineup, as required.

After a swing through country and blues that consisted of lesser-known tracks like No One Cares About Me, Death Letter, John Cockers, The West End and Walk Tall, the band members departed the stage and Mellencamp told a story about how his dad always encouraged him to make time for fun. A tender solo version of Save Some Time To Dream followed.

At one point, Mellencamp had a message for the young bucks of the world that resonated with the boomer music fans who packed the house. In a nutshell, it was: Don’t mess with old guys.

“I’m a dangerous old man,” Mellencamp half-snarled, scanning the legions of grey-haired fans in front of him. “I’ve been flying around the world for the last 59 years, and I see a lot more dangerous old men out there that I wouldn’t want to cross.”

Despite the long stretches of unfamiliar songs, remarks like that endeared Mellencamp to his audience. So did the stories about his grandmother and his father. Plus, the band’s level of musicianship was so extraordinary that it was a pleasure just to watch them.

With the full band back on stage, Mellencamp led them through a homestretch that included the anthemic hits, Rain on the Scarecrow, Paper In Fire, What If I Came Knocking, Little Pink Houses and R.O.C.K. In the U.S.A. Everyone sang along, loud and proud, providing ample proof that you’re never too old to rock out.

John Mellencamp Takes Gritty Trip To Heartland At Palace Theater

By THOMAS KINTNER, Special to the Courant
The Hartford Courant

John Mellencamp has been a voice of the American heartland for more than three decades, a rugged accountant of its glories and discontents. His show Friday at the Palace Theater in Waterbury was a rousing journey through the territory he has covered over the years, a forceful reminder of his music's strength and flexibility.

Opening the show with a straightforward rock quartet as support, Mellencamp churned out the sturdy rumble of "The Authority Song," the haggard edge of his voice providing the tune a formidable anchor. The raw-edged melodic quality of his singing flowed across "No one Cares About Me," and forged an earthy cry to prod "Death Letter" as his band filled out to its full six-piece strength for a blues-lined backdrop colored by Andy York's resonator steel guitar twang.

Mellencamp gritted out lyrics in a near-croak alongside the measured blues rumble of "John Cockers," and swayed coolly across the face of "Check it Out," a billowing accordion line gilding the sound behind him. The set list favored music with substance, spinning outcries against social injustice in the rough-hewn "The West End" and a solo acoustic turn by Mellencamp on the mellow, somber "Jackie Brown."

Mellencamp's last two albums (including one last year that was the subject of an hour-long documentary that opened the program) have veered toward stripped-down music under the production stewardship of T Bone Burnett, material that blossomed in the treatments they received in a live setting. Mellencamp's approach to "Don't Need This Body" was methodical while fiddler Miriam Sturm colored its edges and York chipped in a fluid electric moan. Sturm's sawing made for lively dressing on "Right Behind Me," which showed how far Mellencamp has branched out from his days in the mainstream in everything from the old-timey tale-spinning that preceded it to the relaxed roots gait of the song itself.

The show took its share of pleasant diversions from the 59-year-old Indiana native's considerable roster of hits, easing through the sober "Longest Days" and the banjo-lined, storytelling-meets-sway number "Easter Eve." The tail of the show was built around a stoutly rendered parade of favorites, including an offering of "Jack & Diane" freshened up with a roomy, organic acoustic palette. After a long run of finesse, the pile-driver rock of "Rain on the Scarecrow" and "Paper in Fire" as propelled by drummer Dane Clark felt like departures rather than the baseline around which Mellencamp's career was built.

Stirring romps through past songs including "The Real Life and "What if I Came Knocking" gave way to equally insistent recent fare such as the bounding "No Better Than This," all sewn together by Mellencamp's sharp, elastic band. Its fluid sound powered an expansive "Pink Houses," its throb defined by York on resonator guitar and a hearty swirl of fiddle and accordion. The show eased past the two hour mark as Mellencamp called it a night by kicking the dance party rock of "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." into gear, its groove as flavorful as it was infectious.

John Mellencamp's Friday set list: "Authority Song," "No one Cares About Me," "Death Letter," "John Cockers," "Walk Tall," "The West End," "Check it Out," "Save Some Time to Dream," "Cherry Bomb," "Don't Need This Body," "Right Behind Me," "Jackie Brown," "Longest Days," "Easter Eve," "Jack & Diane," "Small Town," "Rain on the Scarecrow," "Paper in Fire," "The Real Life," "What if I Came Knocking," "If I Die Sudden," "No Better Than This," "Pink Houses," "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A."

John Mellencamp harnesses roots rock

By Jim Sullivan
Saturday, February 5, 2011

John Mellencamp has ruled the sub-Springteen world of middlebrow, populist rock for two decades. Liberal sentiments and melodic music, cut with a bit of grit.

Lately Mellencamp, 59, has reinvented himself as a roots-rocking Americana artist. In fact, if you knew nothing of his history and were at the sold-out Lowell Memorial Auditorium on Thursday, you might have thought he was Ryan Adams’ older brother or Tom Waits’ younger one.

Which means if you wanted to “R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.” it was both the right and wrong place to be.

Right: Because singer-guitarist Mellencamp and his backing sextet turned on the firepower about two-thirds of the way through the 140-minute set with “Rain on the Scarecrow,” “What If I Came Knocking,” “If I Die Sudden,” “Pink Houses” and, yes, the insanely catchy “R.O.C.K.” They encored with a great version of Mink DeVille’s punky r&b tune, “She’s So Tough.”

Wrong: Because the bulk of the show was dominated by alt-country songs from Mellencamp’s latest CD, “No Better Than This,” and similar catalog numbers such as “Deep Blue Heart,” “Walk Tall” and “Cherry Bomb.”

The opener, “Authority Song,” was done up rockabilly style. “Small Town” was solo acoustic. The mega-hit “Jack and Diane” was rejiggered as a country-swing tune. Violinist Miriam Sturm and accordionist Troye Kinnett were prominent, arguably more so than guitarists Andy York and Michael Wanchic. At times, Mellencamp and company seemed like a heartland Pogues.

Not all of this played well. The crowd often chattered through softer songs or unfamiliar reworkings. As he introduced “Longest Days,” Mellencamp busted one couple down front, sarcastically hoping he wasn’t interrupting them.

“People are talking,” he said. “It (messes) me up. I’m pretty stupid.”

That wasn’t the point, of course. He was annoyed they were yakking and they were likely annoyed by the monotonous tone of the music. Out in the lobby, some fans (ex-fans?) were brutal in their assessment.

“What a self-indulgent little (expletive)!” said one. “I paid $78. Play something I know!” griped another.

The Lowell date was the kickoff of the second leg of Mellencamp’s tour. The word is out: Mellencamp is not an arena-rock guy anymore.

Note, too, the smaller, 2,800-seat venue. He’s on a journey to be less commercial.

For anyone who missed it, Mellencamp filed for divorce last month from his wife, model Elaine Irwin. When he sang “No One Cares About Me,” you could only guess from where that came. Even if he’s now dating Meg Ryan.

Classic.

John Mellencamp Sees 'Delia' as an Antidote to 'Candy-Coated Songs'
By Patrick Doyle

During a soundcheck for an  appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman in December, John Mellencamp performed "Delia," a ballad originally recorded 71 years ago by Blind Willie McTell. Mellencamp warmed up with it again at a recent taping for A&E's Private Sessions with Lynn Hoffman.

Back in December, in his dressing room on the sixth floor of the Letterman taping, a gravel-voiced Mellencamp sipped from a bottle of chocolate milk and explained why he’s been playing the blues classic. "If you go back and look at American music, like 'Delia' for example, it was all about death, it was all about suffering," Mellencamp tells Rolling Stone. "That's why they call it the blues. In today's world, we've had so many candy-coated songs that have become popular music."

Like much of Mellencamp's recent material, the song takes a close look at mortality, but he doesn't see it as dark. "People say, 'Oh my God! He's talking about dying, Oh my God! He's talking about sorrow,'" he says. "Then it's like people hang this tag on it as dark. The original American songs were always dark. There was probably a couple happy ones I assume, but my research has always led me to these types of songs. And I think these types of songs are more of what we hide from then we want to admit. I don't know what people think. I don't know what they think because I don't read the songs that way. You just saw me play 'Delia.' I mean, did I sing it sad? You know, it's a sad fucking song."

Elaine Irwin Speaks About Splitting With John Cougar Mellencamp For The First Time

Supermodel, Elaine Irwin recently separated from her husband, John Cougar Mellencamp after 18 years of marriage and it hasn't been the easiest split. But, she's all about the future and is undoubtedly the new "IT" girl on the market. GlobalGrind has the pleasure of speaking with this beautiful, legendary model for an EXCLUSIVE interview, and when asked about how she felt of her separation after 18 years, Irwin said, "The only thing certain in life is change itself. Change is good, some would say it is our greatest teacher, and I am embracing it".

Elaine for years has been a model citizen, a blue girl in a red state. Elaine, the face of Almay Cosmetics, has always been thoughtful and outspoken about her political views. In 2004, she was an at-large delegate at the Democratic National Convention and has played a great role in helping President Obama achieve his goals and dreams. Speaking on her political thoughts, she told us, "I have beliefs and convictions that I won't compromise on. For instance 22 year old boys losing body parts over an unnecessary war, that was hard for me to stomach."

Elaine has for decades graced the covers of many magazines, including Vogue, which was shot by one of America's greatest photographers, Richard Avedon. She is raising her two children in Indiana and her beauty, inside and out, gets a GlobalGrind salute! She is a MODEL CITIZEN.
