Title: Durham, NC Show
Post by: Tockit on March 02, 2011, 02:12:25 am
It's been on my 'bucket list' to see Mellencamp before he hangs up his guitar.

I've loved his music since I was first heard him back in the early 80's!

I went to the Durham show tonight and he did not disappoint!

Excellent sound (the band was super tight), excellent set list, and excellent show!

His voice sounds just as good today as I remember it in the 80's!

The show was everything I expected and more !!!!!!!

I attended the Richmond show last week.  I enjoyed the varied set list, thought the movie was great, John was in great form, but I thought the mix was horrible.  I ended up leaving, just after "Paper & Fire", because the drums were mixed so loud, it was all I could hear.  It was giving me a severe headache, even with earplugs in.  The guitars and other instruments were completely buried.  I was seated in the 1st row of the Mezzanine, about 20 rows from the stage.  Maybe it was the drummer's style, I noticed he played with sticks the entire night, I expected him to use brushes for the rockabilly tunes while he was on the smaller kit.  It was so bad that I ended up missing John performing his excellent tune "No Better Than This".

The drums were also far too loud at the Atlanta show (I posted on another thread already). It was mostly the bass drums. It significantly impacted my enjoyment too. I was 5th row from stage on side so speakers were in front of us. But I walked around the venue a bit during the show and it wasn't much better. The bass drum was ridiculous!!! Big fan for years and have seen several shows ... I like the set and the variety very much ... but the bass drums ruined a lot of the show for me. I agree the mix was bad. It was Metallica drums at a Enya concert.
