“Jack and Diane” was the #1 song on the Billboard charts on this day in 1982. The song was from John Mellencamp’s breakthrough album, American Fool.   This was the last album that he recorded with his stage moniker John Cougar.   John had the record company add his real surname to his stage moniker, and his next album– 1983′s “Uh-Huh” –was released under John Cougar Mellencamp.  In 1991, he dropped the “Cougar” from his name completely, and has been John Mellencamp ever since.
