Title: Ticket prices - What a rip off
Post by: kevtic on April 13, 2011, 06:32:25 am
Surprised there isn't a thread on ticket prices.  Maybe it's been deleted and maybe this will follow.

I was really excited to see JM was coming to Glasgow as I've always been a fan and wanted to see him live.  I signed up here to get access to the pre-sale then I saw the prices.  £145 for a seat in the front 10 rows  :o :o £72 top price ticket.  That's an outrageous price to charge considering he hasn't been here for so long.  That's more than Springsteen and dare I say it Take That.

Sadly I refuse to pay that kind of price for a ticket.  Although there are cheaper tickets from experience they are too far away and still expensive.

I don't know how you can justify these prices I'd feel completely ripped off if I did pay those prices.  For a guy renowned for his fights for justice and being a man of the people it saddens me he would rip his fans off this way.

Having sympathy for ur plight mate...!..but u cant blame the artist for the pricing of tickets...i paid 85quid in 2oo4 for springsteen in the albert hall(devils and dust tour)...with premier acts and small venues this scenario happens..and the workin man gets squeezed..ticketmaster hav collared the market..ther the rip off merchants with live nation....you cant blame john mellencamp..!..hard times for the honest man .

Ummm excuse me, but please.....

of course you can blame john, you think john doesnt have control over the ticket prices - you are seriously deluded....plenty of bands charge much less....pearl jam for example - every seat in the house is $75 dollars no matter where you sit....

and dare i day even on the eddie vedder solo tour each ticket was about 80 dollars WITH FEES for the best seats and believe me - he sold out way faster than JM and could have charge much more - check out the prices now compared with the demand for JM resales....

who in the world do you think sets the prices for a JM concert besides JM?

I personally feel he can charge whatever he wants and its not like he is having a problem selling tix but lets have some truth here as well...

Think the truth lies somewhere in the middle.  JM probably has some kind of knowledge on prices but it will be his management and the promoters who set the actual price and they probably think the market can sustain that price and they are probably right there is just no way I'm paying it.  Ticket prices have been steadily creeping up in the last 4 or 5 years and are now moving into complete rip off territory.  The touring market has become saturated in the last few years as album sales drop and bands have to go on the road to make money.  I don't see how this market can continue to charge at the current level without something giving.

i think in this case they are taking advantage of the fact he hasn't visited Europe in so long to get the maximum price for the tickets which obviously makes good business sense but it shouldn't always be about how much money you can make.

agreed - that really is a lot esp for the bad seats - i do agree that others are involved but the buck stops with JM IMO...

Maybe youll be able to get some last minute better priced seats - it is a GREAt show! :)

Okay, completely off topic, but had to respond. I sent you a PM "bjmjpl" if this is the same "bjmjpl" that went to the 92Y event a few weeks ago.

in the end everybody has the freedom to decide if he wants to spend the money or not, no matter how much it is.
every business is the same, the consumer decides if he wants to pay or leave it.
noboy can expect an artist to play just because the people want to see him. sometimes I feel that our society wants too much from all, and all for free at every time.
for me seeing him live again after 20 years will be an experience you cannot measure in dollars or euros. I´d break the bank to see him playing...

Well I chose not to.

I wasn't expecting to see him for free just wasn't expecting to be ripped off.

£72 top price ticket.

I paid roughly $75.00 for a ticket to the BSMF, where John Mellencamp headlined last Saturday. John Mellencamp and his band were amazing, and everybody I was with agreed that his performance alone was worth the entire ticket price.

Well worth it! Had front row for both Chicago shows, 6th row for the Morris. Got a wink from John and 2 guitar picks from Andy!

That's how I feel.  If he's touring near me, I don't care what he charges.  Neither of us (John or me) is getting any younger; so, the ticket price is less important to me than location and date.

Do you think they're charging more for tickets now because record sales have dropped so much?  I mean, the artists can't be making as much money from 99 cent tracks on itunes as they can from selling a 16.99 CD, right?
