"From the time he contributed a completely rocked out version of Woody's "Do Re Mi" for A Vision Shared, the album of Woody's songs we did almost 25 years ago, I had the feeling that John was a brother and part of our family mission." said Nora Guthrie, Director of the Woody Guthrie Archives, President of Woody Guthrie Publications and the lat folk icon's daughter. "He really knows the material and the movement so it's not something in which he merely dabbles to generate cocktail conversation. Having John Mellencamp as part of the show in Tulsa with all that charged, positive energy he always delivers, promises to make the event a totally rockin' kick-off of Woody's Centennial celebration."
Nora presented John with the Woody Guthrie Award at the Huntington's Disease Society of America's annual dinner in 2003. That evening John said " "If anybody would even remotely think that I'm following in the footsteps of Woody Guthrie I would say that would be a positive thing. If I have ever had a hero it's been Woody Guthrie."
During John's career he has recorded three of Guthrie's songs: "Do Re Mi" and "This Land Is Your Land" in 1988 for the A Vision Shared tribute album and "Johnny Hart" in 2003 for his Trouble No More album.
“The goal of The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration is not just to pay tribute to Guthrie’s obvious contributions to American music, but to also broaden the national understanding of his cultural impact,” said GRAMMY Museum Executive Director, Bob Santelli. “The line-up scheduled for the Brady Theater show in Tulsa speaks volumes about Guthrie’s influence. It’s truly an honor to be producing this all-star event.”
The Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration is one of the largest and most comprehensive Centennial celebrations ever staged for an American music icon. For the most up-to-date information and a complete schedule of events for the entire Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration, visit www.woody100.com.
