511  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Announcements & Updates / Troubled Land Included On T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue on: July 14, 2011, 10:22:17 am
07.13.2011 - Concert album inspired by Participant Media’s documentary, Waiting for “Superman”

Shout! Factory And Participant Music To Release T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue

Featuring Elton John, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, John Mellencamp, Gregg Allman, Ralph Stanley, Neko Case, Jim James, Jeff Bridges, Punch Brothers, Karen Elson & The Secret Sisters

In Stores October 18

On October 18 Shout! Factory will release T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue, an album showcasing 11 performances from a benefit concert at New York’s famed Beacon Theatre that Burnett orchestrated last year with Participant Media. Proceeds from album sales, as with the live show, will benefit The Participant Foundation, to support the inclusion of music and arts education in public school systems.

In October 2010, multiple-Grammy® and Oscar®-winning producer T Bone Burnett organized an impressive group of musicians, dubbed The Speaking Clock Revue, and joined with Participant Media for concerts benefiting arts education. The lineup included Elton John, Elvis Costello, Leon Russell, John Mellencamp, Gregg Allman, Ralph Stanley, Jeff Bridges, Neko Case, Jim James, Punch Brothers, Karen Elson, and The Secret Sisters. The Speaking Clock Revue was recorded at the Beacon Theater in New York, and featured a house band made up of musicians from many Burnett-produced recordings and led by music director and guitarist Marc Ribot.

Burnett was inspired to do the fundraising concerts after attending an early screening of Participant’s documentary Waiting for “Superman,” from Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, It Might Get Loud), which focused on the troubled state of public education in the U.S., following a handful of promising students through a U.S. public school system and offering creative new approaches to education reform. Participant’s Jeff Skoll, Jim Berk, Jeff Ivers and John Schreiber serve as executive producers on the album, the first release under the company’s newly-created Participant Music banner.

Said Berk, “T Bone and his amazing lineup of musical artists, inspired by Waiting for “Superman,” are making it possible for everyone to enjoy their outstanding performances, and at the same time, help to bring music and arts education to students across the country.”

Burnett, well-known for his support of the roots and American music traditions, had collaborated previously with nearly all of the performers on The Speaking Clock Revue, with the exception of Jim James, Karen Elson and Punch Brothers, whom he asked to participate out of admiration. The inspired performances focused mainly on songs recorded with Burnett, many from recent albums.

With the likes of the venerable Ralph Stanley and duo of Elton John and Leon Russell sharing a stage with up-and-comers such as The Secret Sisters and Karen Elson, the result is a remarkable mix of artistry. The electricity is palpable as Neko Case lends her smoky harmonies to “Midnight Rider” with Gregg Allman, back on stage following a recent liver transplant, and as John Mellencamp delivers a heartfelt “Troubled Land.” Other highlights included on The Speaking Clock Revue are Jim James performing “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” from My Morning Jacket’s new album Circuital, Punch Brothers dazzling with their experimental bluegrass stylings on “Rye Whiskey,” and Burnett and emcee Elvis Costello accompanying Jeff Bridges for a rousing rendition of “Fallin’ & Flyin’.” The tracks selected to be included on the album were chosen by Burnett in conjunction with the artists.

In a review of the show, Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote “The songs were serious, which didn’t mean they were dull. It was a concert of murder ballads and pleas for redemption, tall tales and tales of sorrow. Youthful verve — the breakneck bluegrass picking and warped traditionalism of the Punch Brothers, delicately harmonized and rocked-up versions of Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash songs by The Secret Sisters — was juxtaposed with the burdens and lessons of age.”

Burnett was aiming to convey the excitement of collaboration and creation to a live audience, and he was successful. “The privacy and the intimacy of the studio afford artists the freedom to create,” Burnett says, “but something thrilling happens in getting away from the machines and into the live communication of real-time storytelling in the larger community. The first tour I went on, my first job in show business, was on The Rolling Thunder Revue, and I’ve come back to that type of collaborative and extraordinarily rewarding experience from time to time.”

T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue will be widely available in stores and online beginning October 18.

514  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Mellencamp.com Blog / Mellencamp in incredible form after 19-year gap on: July 08, 2011, 03:20:40 pm
http://jewishtelegraph.com/arts_6.html
By Mike Cohen

John Mellencamp at Manchester Apollo

THE omens weren't good.

It had been 19 years since John Mellencamp last visited these shores. In those intervening years he had suffered a heart-attack and seemed to be mellowing out.

In addition, his support act was a one-hour documentary about the making of his latest album No Better Than This.

While I could happily have watched this documentary at home - and I will when it is released on DVD - it did ruin the mood slightly. Then again, when I saw him in 1992 at Birmingham NEC, he was supported by a juggler.

But I need not have worried. From the opening notes of Authority Song, Mellencamp was in incredible form.

He followed this with No One Cares About Me which blew away the version on his newest album.

Of course, it was the classics which got the best reception, but the tracks from No Better Than This went down very well.

Mellencamp did a Dylan for the opening part of the show - ie not addressing the audience - but once he started talking there was no stopping him.

He spoke of meeting a fan before the gig who asked him to perform Cherry Bomb.

Strangely, the artist formerly known as Cougar, said he preferred to look forward, not back.

But he still performed an incredible acapella version of Cherry Bomb, accompanied by 3,000 fans, which made the hairs stand up all over my body.

Easter Eve, from No Better Than This, was another highlight, telling the story of how his son saved him from a beating.

No-one recognised the start of his biggest hit, Jack & Diane, as he countryfied it, but it still got a huge roar.

And then it was classics all the way with Jackie Brown, Small Town, Rain on the Scarecrow, Paper in Fire, Crumblin' Down, Pink Houses and R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.

One lucky guy even got dragged on stage to sing a verse of R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.

And despite everyone clammering for more, we knew there was no way he could top that song, so there was no disappointment as the lights came back on.

One of the reasons for Mellencamp's success is his incredible band, including violinist Miriam Sturm. She performs the same role as the late great Clarens Clemons did for Bruce Springsteen.

She is Mellencamp's foil and her violin - not exactly a rock instrument - adds another dimension to the songs.

So John, don't leave it another 19 years till you come again - and next time why not perform for an extra hour instead of showing us a film.

516  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Announcements & Updates / Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County Tickets Going On Sale Monday on: July 07, 2011, 02:06:23 pm
Ghost Brothers of Darkland County TICKETS GOING ON SALE MONDAY
The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA recently announced the hotly anticipated spring 2012 world premiere Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a chilling new musical with music and lyrics by John Mellencamp and book by Stephen King.

The project, more than a decade in the making, will have individual tickets go on sale Monday, July 11th through the Alliance Theater's website. The production is scheduled for April 4 through May 13th, 2012.

One of the world's most popular authors and one of America’s most honored musicians have created a riveting Southern gothic musical fraught with mystery, tragedy, and ghosts of the past, along with a roots and blues-tinged score that is sure to leave audiences asking for more. Alliance Artistic Director Susan V. Booth directs, with musical direction provided by legendary producer T Bone Burnett.

Here is an overview of the story: In the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi in 1957, a terrible tragedy took the lives of two brothers and a beautiful young girl. During the next forty years, the events of that night became the stuff of local legend. But legend is often just another word for lie. Joe McCandless knows what really happened; he saw it all. The question is whether or not he can bring himself to tell the truth in time to save his own troubled sons, and whether the ghosts left behind by an act of violence will help him – or tear the McCandless family apart forever.

Stephen King recently spoke about the project at the Alliance Theatre. You can watch part of the interview on YouTube. Stay tuned to Mellencamp.com for more details on the project as we get closer to the premiere!

523  MELLENCAMP DISCUSSION / All About John / Re: John Covers "Born Under a Bad Sign?" on: June 28, 2011, 01:46:40 pm
Some reports of the Copenhagen show indicate John covered this Booker T classic. Can anyone confirm this? Would love to hear it if it's true.
Yes it is true. They played it at the first show in Copenhagen but dropped it from the set list so far.
