i forgot to mention that they didnt play "No Better Than This". seems like it had been dropped for the european tour.
93  MELLENCAMP DISCUSSION / No Better Than This Tour Talk / Re: Berlin, Germany on: June 27, 2011, 08:27:09 am
I don´t agree. what is the difference between a boring opening act and a movie? anyone can decide to watch it or go out and wait for the real show to start. the movie was about the tour and the making of the album, about america. I dont think that too many of us had the chance to get to know a lot about this before.

but the show itself is what counts and that was simply fantastic, I rate the show higher than the 88 or 92 shows.
and playing even more old songs? I did not wait 2 decades to hear the old songs, I wanted to see what music he does TODAY, besides his past albums are lightyears ahead of his early stuff. in my opinion the mix is right, and 2 hours full of firstclass music should be enough.

here are two unspectacular pictures of the show

you guess it...the show was fantastic!!! John and the band put on a great performance, they rocked the tempodrom.

at 8 the movie started. i think this has been discussed a lot before, today many people were bored and rather went out to have a drink.
anyway, John and the band came out on time at 9:20. the setlist was exactly as you know it, "Easter Eve" instead of "Right Behind Me".

John looked in great shape and was full of energy. his voice sounded great, and I think he enjoyed the show as well. the audience started to wake up when "Check it out" came, most people wanted to hear him playing the old hits.
for me the best song without doubt today was "The West End". John introduced the song saying that "The West End is the place I come from". what a song this is!

the band played simply fantastic, everyone did a great job, true professionals. Miriam of course stood out, so did Andy York who played like Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Brian Jones in one person. Jon E. Gee was great as well, looking cool with his sunglasses, like Apollo Creed playing bass. Troye, Dane and Mike stayed mostly in background, the whole band sounded fantastic. John can be proud of them!

the show ended at 23:20, exact 2 hours of all one could expect and a little more. for those interested, Meg Ryan was in the audience, Hud also supposed to be here.
after 19 years I am grateful of having the chance to see John live. today the dream came true, thanks a lot for this show to John, the band and the whole staff making it possible.

everyone who will go to Den Haag tomorrow, you will see a great concert! enjoy it!
I prepare for next weekend in London...

i wish everyone in the band and the whole staff a good journey to europe! we expect you all in good shape and mood, hopefully you will enjoy playing here!
have a safe trip!
98  MELLENCAMP DISCUSSION / All About John / Re: JM Plays "Pink Houses" with Billy Joel on: June 12, 2011, 03:51:28 pm
indeed a great performance, thanks for the video!

wondering if the "gasoline station lyrics" were unique for this performance or if John used to change this second verse before or later?
99  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Ticket & Tour Questions / Re: Berlin on: June 09, 2011, 03:16:25 pm
in about 2 weeks John and his band will be here. for all you americans it may sound crazy, because you had so many tours, but this will be his first european tour since 1992.
the world has changed a lot since then, but not the meaning and influence of John´s music.

as far as i know there are still tickets available. since a few days a little pr was to be seen here in the city, a few tour posters on the walls, not too much but at least.
the "Tempodrom" in berlin is a great theatre venue, not too big, but it looks unique and with the former train station "Anhalter Bahnhof" it has a part of bad germany history right in front of its doors.

is anyone coming over from the us? if so, maybe we can meet, let me know.
100  MELLENCAMP DISCUSSION / Tour Talk / Re: Ticket prices - What a rip off on: April 22, 2011, 03:42:50 pm
in the end everybody has the freedom to decide if he wants to spend the money or not, no matter how much it is.
every business is the same, the consumer decides if he wants to pay or leave it.
noboy can expect an artist to play just because the people want to see him. sometimes I feel that our society wants too much from all, and all for free at every time.
for me seeing him live again after 20 years will be an experience you cannot measure in dollars or euros. I´d break the bank to see him playing...
101  MELLENCAMP DISCUSSION / All About John / Re: Biography Information Needed on John for daughter's 4th grade project! on: April 12, 2011, 03:15:44 pm
Johann Heinrich Möllenkamp, born 1823, from the small village of Kalkriese, north western germany, in the middle of nowhere. in 1844 he married Anna Maria Bramsche and they emigrated to the USA. they are supposed to be the ancestors of the Mellencamp family. their son had several children, one of them was "Grandpa Speck".
the name "Möllenkamp" is not rare in this part of germany, even today.

if John and the band would travel by bus on their european tour from berlin/germany to den haag/netherlands, they would pass this region and teach young Speck a nice ancestry lesson:). but i guess they rather go by plane.

but i think the initial question was about John´s parents, I think their names are Richard and Marilyn.
102  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Ticket & Tour Questions / Berlin on: April 12, 2011, 01:15:03 am
I am still so excited about the news of the upcoming european tour! so far got tickets for london and all germany shows. Berlin will be a highlight for sure. I wonder if John ever played Berlin before?
does any of the experts know about this? past world tours (Lonesome Jubilee 1988, Whenever We Wanted 1993) did not include berlin, as far as I remember.
But maybe the band was here in the very early days, when they used to play as opening acts for bands like The Kinks, Kiss, Heart etc... is there any kind of tour-diary, exactly what day where what was played?

speaking of berlin, I´d like to try something I normally dont do, request a song. "WE ARE THE PEOPLE", a song that he didn´t even play in 1988.
writing this song in 1987, John foresaw german history. in 1989 people in the former GDR (east germany) started so-called "monday demonstrations", where they used to gather in big cities on monday evening to walk through the streets and protest against the communist regime. hundreds of thousands of people peacefully protested and their famous chant was "Wir sind das Volk (=WE ARE THE PEOPLE)". it was the beginning of the breakdown of the wall one year later.

neither John nor the east germans invented these phrase, it was often used before, but performing this song in the reunited berlin more than 20 years after, would fit in my opinion. besides it has a great melody and fiddle solo.
103  NON-JOHN DISCUSSION / The Melting Pot / Re: Paintings of John Mellencamp at SICA on: April 06, 2011, 04:51:30 pm
"A fan who owns 12 of John's paintings"....how can fans buy any of his paintings? are they for sale anywhere anytime?
104  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Ticket & Tour Questions / Re: European Setlist on: April 04, 2011, 02:13:43 pm
oh yes, sorry...so many kids, but he can bring them all over to europe!
105  MELLENCAMP.COM ANNOUNCEMENTS / Ticket & Tour Questions / Re: European Setlist on: April 03, 2011, 03:04:09 pm
no, please not a greatest hits tour for europe! I hope the show will be the same as the american, including the warm-up film, the lighting, and of course the songs. I hope we hear as much songs from the past 2 records as possible.
and I hope we can see his son Hud on guitar as well!
